James Heiting

James Otto Heiting, Managing Partner

“I decided to become an attorney the day I sat in the back of a courtroom. Young, naive and scared, I wondered if my life was over. My attorney didn’t tell me what was going on; he even joked with the other side and left me hanging while he went fishing. I never forgot what it felt like. And I never allow an attorney to treat my clients that way.”

James Heiting was elected President of the State Bar of California (2005-2006), including all of its 205,000+lawyers.

When James Heiting was president of the Riverside County Bar Association, he authored “Rules on Professional Responsibility and Civility,” a handbook that was adopted by Riverside County’s judges and courts. In his position on the California State Board of Governors, before he was elected President, he was a Vice President and Chair of the Planning and Budget Committee, and he served as the State Bar Treasurer.

The managing partner of Heiting and Irwin, Jim has practiced law since 1976 when he received his Juris doctorate from Western State University College of Law (he is a member of their Hall of Fame). He is admitted to practice before all courts of the state, the federal courts, the United States Court of Federal Claims and the California and United States Supreme Courts.

Mr. Heiting has also served as a volunteer to assist the courts in diminishing their backlog of cases, and continues to serve as a court-appointed arbitrator and mediator in California Court of Appeals.

Recognized as a successful and tenacious lawyer, his other professional accomplishments include:
